Where To Kite In Mui Ne
There are two key kitesurfing spots in the Mui Ne area. The first is Mui Ne beach, and this is where you’ll find the most kitesurfing stations—including Surfpoint. You can get to the beach by going down the limited beach access roads, or through the resorts along the waterfront. The main street of Mui Ne, Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, is the first street back from the water. You’ll find Surfpoint at Sea Horse Resort and Spa; 16 Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, Mũi Né, Thành phố Phan Thiết, Bình Thuận, Việt Nam—reach us by walking into the main car park and following the signs!
Mui Ne main beach is a gently curving, south facing beach. In the high season, the wind is typically cross-shore to cross-onshore. While it can get a little choppy when the wind is up, past the breakers Mui Ne is perfect for learning. Starting at one end, the beach is over a kilometre long, and lessons involve walking to the eastern end, getting into the water and practicing at a leisuring pace. In a typical two hour lesson, you’ll only need to take a break from the water to walk a few times. This means you’ll spend the absolute maximum amount of time focused on learning to kitesurf.
Launching & Landing at Mui Ne Main Beach
Mui Ne beach has many places to set up and launch your kite, but it's best to do so from one of the kite stations. Not only will there be people to help you launch and land, but you’ll be able to keep a safe distance from other beach goers. At Surfpoint, our team is always around to help you set up, launch and land your kite.
Wave Spot - Malibu Beach
The other main kitesurfing spot is on the far side of Mui Ne village, which is about a 15-20 minute drive from the main Mui Ne beach area. This spot is called Malibu beach, and gets great waves, but is less accessible. Similarly to the main Mui Ne beach spot, access to Malibu is through the nearby resorts. The wind is typically more onshore, which can be good for wave surfing and hitting kickers, but is harder to learn.

Wind Conditions
Mui Ne High Season
Mui Ne has two distinct seasons. October to April is the high season, and is typically drier and cooler compared to the low season. During the high season, the windy days per month gradually increase, until there’s consistent wind nearly every single day in January and February. In the peak months, the wind will generally be in by 10am, and quickly increase to 20 knots and over, with particularly windy days hitting nearly 30 knots of consistent breeze, with gusts even higher. Some days, the wind will come in light and gradually pick up to around 18 knots—these days are perfect for freestyle and learning.
The prevailing winds are almost always a smooth northeasterly tradewind, amplified by thermic activity. The trade winds sweeps down the coast of Vietnam to the equatorial region, and as it passes Mui Ne’s hot sand dunes, the speed increases and shifts a little more easterly. This results in strong, smooth wind that is a perfect direction for Mui Ne main beach’s predominantly freeride and big air scene, and solid wave action at Malibu.

Wind Conditions
Mui Ne Summer Season
The summer season in Mui Ne is from May to September, and while it doesn’t have the same strong, thermal wind as in the winter high season, there’s still plenty of wind! In this season, the wind is typically southerly, and lighter than high season. During summer, Mui Ne is perfect for foiling, wing foiling and lightwind disciplines such as freestyle and progressive freeride.
You might not get the same pumping wind and steep kickers, but summer is relaxed, quiet and an idyllic getaway from the hustle and bustle. You’ll get plenty of windy days if you’re not in a rush, and looking for somewhere to rest and recharge and hangout with good food and good vibes.
Kites and Boards
Mui Ne Kitesurfing Gear Guide
Mui Ne is not a flatwater spot, and does have some chop. This, and a wide variety of wind conditions, generally make it most suitable for freeride and big air. The ideal quiver to bring is an all-terrain twintip with comfortable footstraps, and a two-kite quiver of freeride kites, about 3 sizes apart for heavier riders, or 2 sizes apart for smaller riders.
While it is perfectly possible to use freestyle-specific kites and boots in Mui Ne, we wouldn’t recommend it. The wave and current action, paired with a cross-shore breeze, can make getting upwind difficult in boots.
If you don’t have your own gear, or you’re not sure what to bring—rent from us instead! We carry a great range of modern, quality kites, boards and harnesses for rent. Our kites are great for the local conditions, perform well and are very durable—giving you peace of mind during your session.
